The reluctance in the industry to move the hardware forward was holding back progress on software for years. Without the iPhone, I am not sure the G1 nor more updated versions of the Sidekick could ever have been built. Apple was always good at marketing and changing people's minds. And the first iPhone, while a lot less impressive than people like to think, was instrumental in getting hardware manufacturers and telecom providers to start moving away from feature phones. The G1 was the first device to really qualify as a modern smart phone. The Sidekick was a trail blazer that demonstrated the need for phones to do more than just voice communication. But they couldn't find any hardware manufacturer that was willing to build something that differed so much from established feature phones. They had ground-breaking ideas for the foundation of a modern mobile operating system. I remember Android (and later Google) struggling mightily to execute on their vision. There was a lot of doubt about whether phones should have full keyboards, whether touch screens were an optional feature, whether firmware should be standardized across models, whether everybody should use Java Micro Edition or maybe something entirely different, and for that matter, whether downloadable apps were even needed. If you were in the industry, the time seemed ripe for smart phones, but carriers and phone makers were incredibly reluctant to make this transition. The G1 was really the first device to lay the foundation for what we have come to expect from modern phones. The Sidekick was still very much a feature phone, but the writing was on the wall. He then went on to found Android, which got acquired by Google and released the G1 (aka HTC Dream). That phone wouldn’t have major issues as far as signal goes nowadays. Maybe the Samsung Android based sidekick would work. So the device wouldnt be very functional in the modern era.
